University of South Carolina Use Policy

The following guidance is provided to the University of South Carolina McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise for Students.  The McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise shall provide a copy of this memorandum to each Student/Advisee and each Advisor who participates in the Advisory Program prior to their participation in the Advisory Program.

Prior to their participation in the Advisory Program:

  1. Each Student/Advisee and each Advisor will be informed that state and federal law and University of SouthCarolina policy prohibit unlawful discrimination and harassment in educational or employment opportunities on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, age, disability, veteran status, genetics, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, and that such prohibition extends to sexual assault.

  2. Each student will be provided contact information for the appropriate USC staff member (Contact Person) in the McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise Advisory Program in the event of an incident of unlawful discrimination or harassment, or sexual assault. Each student will also be informed that he/she may report a sexual assault directly on the Stop Sexual Assault Website:https://www.sc.edu/about/initiatives/safety/stop_sexual_assault/index.php or to the EOP Office as indicated below.

  3. On the Stop Sexual Assault homepage, clicking the Getting Help link in the menu on the left will direct the student to a page which allows a report to be filed by clicking the red bold text on the right which reads Make a Report.The Stop Sexual Assault homepage also contains links to information about support services for persons subjected to sexual assault.

  4. Currently, the Contact Person in the McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise Advisory Program is Dirk Brown. His email address is dirk@sc.edu. Telephone number: 803-777-1717. The Contact Person will report the incident to the EOP Office, unless the student wishes to file a complaint himself or herself, in which case the student will be directed to report the incident to the EOP Office. The student will be informed that the EOP Office is located at 1600 Hampton Street, Suite 805, Columbia, SC 29208. The telephone number: 803-777-3854. The student will also be informed that he/she may file a complaint on the EOP Office website at:https://sc.edu/eop, by clicking the red Report an Incident link near the center of the EOP homepage. This will take the student to an online complaint form, which may be completed online or printed and delivered or mailed to the EOP Office at the above address or faxed to the EOP Office at 803-777-2296.

  5. Each student will be informed by the McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise Advisory Program of the confidential sources at the University of South Carolina, in the event the student decides he/she does not wish to report the incident to an employee of the University of South Carolina who is required to redress or report the incident.

  6. Students will be informed of the opportunity to seek assistance and support from employees working in the following offices at USC without triggering a University investigation that could reveal the victim’s identity:

  7. The student should be informed that services of these offices are available to the student irrespective of whether the student files a complaint.

  8. The student will be informed that once a report is filed with the EOP Office and the student indicates to the EOPoffice that the student desires to participate in the EOP investigative process, an investigation will be conducted by the EOP Office and the student will be afforded any appropriate interim measures he/she requests, such as no contact orders.

  9. The student will be informed that any questions should be addressed to the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs: 803-777-3854.

  10. The McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise Advisory Program shall require each student andeach advisor to acknowledge in writing (via hard copy, or electronically) that he/she has been provided a copy of this guidance, understands the contents hereof and agrees to abide by any University of South Carolina policies described or referred to herein.

  11. The signature of each advisor shall serve as acknowledgment that he/she understands that violation of state orfederal laws, or University of South Carolina anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies shall not be tolerated and that anyone violating such laws and/or policies may be subject to liability or other sanctions as provided by the applicable state and/or federal law or University policy.
